Teachers notes on using the relaxation giant dice

This dice was created to help in establishing ways for children to relax and to set a life long ability to do so. Each child takes it in turns to throw the dice and then the group does the activity guided by the teacher.

Whatever comes up on the dice is the prompt for the relaxation activity lead by the teacher.

There are two parts to the game:

Step 1: Letting it all go...

Step 2: The activity lead by the teacher:

There are many ways to let go and to relax, some are easy to use in a group, classroom setting and these are just some of our suggestions. You can combine any one of these aids to relaxation for each of the die faces. You may have other sounds or actions that achieve similar results.

1) Big breathe in filling completely the lungs and a big breath out… ahhhhhh

Listen to the audio file

2) Big breathe in filling completely the lungs and a big breath out… ohhhhhh

Listen to an audio file

3) Big breathe in filling completely the lungs and a big breath out… Hmmmmmm making all the chest and throat vibrate.

Listen to an audio file.

We suggest each exercise be done for between 3 to 6 breaths. It all depends on the children, and the teachers experience and expertise in leading the group.

With time you can work on extending the number of breaths for each throw of the dice.

As you chose, you can also explore some of the feelings and experiences of the children as they play their way through the exercise.

This resource can support the bullying and safe behaviors dice games.

Standing:

Stand comfortably with your feet about shoulders width apart. Close your eyes and take a deep breath in and let it all out with your chosen breath release. Repeat for as many times as you feel the children remain engaged.

We suggest 3 to 5 cycles and always try to get them to make as much noise as possible as they let it all go…

Shake like a tree:

Stand comfortably with your feet about shoulders width apart. Close your eyes and take a deep breath in and as you breath out shake like a tree in a the wind. Repeat for as many times as you feel the children remain engaged.

We suggest 3 to 5 cycles and always try to get them to make as much noise as possible with each exhalation as they let it all go…

You are in the water:

Sit with your eyes closed. Feel your body immersed in cool, calm, still water. With each breathe in, feel the water cool your body and with each breath out, feel the tensions being taken away. As you breathe in again, feel your body being cooled and calmed…

Continue with each breath for 5 or 6 cycles.

You feel safe and secure

Think of a place where you feel safe and secure. It might be at home, at grandma and grandpa’s, in the arms of mum and dad or even snuggled up in bed. Keep that place, the feelings, your feelings when there as you breathe in and out. With each out breath just feeling more safe, more secure in your favorite safe, secure place.

Appreciate the sense of wellbeing as you rest in that place. Know those feelings and look for them when you are in different places and with anyone.

The cycle can be continued for as long as is engaging – around 5 or 6 cycles.

Floating in water:

Lie down on the floor, face up. Close your eyes and feel yourself beginning to float, being completely held by the surrounding water that is around you. This warm, supportive water allows you to relax, to feel calm, to float as if free.

With each breath in, you float more easily, with each breath out you feel more relaxed, more supported.

Continue the cycle for around 5 or 6 cycles.

Floating in the sky:

Lie down on the floor, face up. Close your eyes and feel yourself beginning to float, to float up into the air.

With each breathe in you float more easily, with each breath out you feel more relaxed, floating higher. With each breath you float higher, like a balloon floating away in the wind.

With each breath you float higher, more easily with more freedom.

Continue the cycle for around 5 or 6 cycles
